Manfred Bründl studierte ab 1980 an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Künste Graz ein kombiniertes Studium der klassischen und der Jazzmusik. Zur Zeit seines Abschlusses 1985 war er der erste staatliche anerkannte und diplomierte Jazz- und Klassikbassist Europas. Zwischen 1983 und 1985 war er Mitglied des Quartetts von Heinz Sauer; anschließend arbeitete er mit Walter Norris, Gabriele Hasler, aber auch mit Albert Mangelsdorff, Charlie Mariano, Ack van Rooyen, Christof Lauer und Dave Liebman sowie mit zahlreichen Musikern der österreichischen Szene wie Fritz Pauer, Harry Pepl, Leo Wright, oder Erich Kleinschuster. Bründl leitet seit 1987 eigene Gruppen, zunächst „Brüma“ mit Matthias Schubert, Bob Degen und Janusz Stefanski. In seiner Gruppe „Basslab“ spielte er mit Schubert, Simon Nabatov und Barry Altschul das Album „Live“ (1992) ein. Er war im Auftrag des Goethe-Instituts auf Tourneen in Afrika, Asien, Kanada und Lateinamerika. Außerdem unterhielt er ein Trio mit Tomasz Stanko und Michael Riessler bzw. Wollie Kaiser. 1995 gründete er das Hessische Art Ensemble Wiesbaden, das den Übergang zur Neuen Musik auslotete und Bründls Zyklus „Fablichtklänge“ aufführte. 1999 gründete er das Crossover-Ensemble Composers Orchestra. Er komponierte auch die Musik für den Film "Mein Bruder der Idiot"(2000), die er mit Till Brönner einspielte. Die CD „respect“ seiner aktuellen Gruppe Silent Bass mit Hugo Read, Achim Kaufmann und Jo Thönes wurde 2006 für den Deutschen Schallplattenpreis nominiert. 2008 wurde sein Album "Crosshatched" veröffentlicht.
Bründl war seit 1989 Dozent an der Universität Mainz und wurde 1996 als Professor an die Hochschule für Musik in Weimar berufen, wo er das Institut für Jazz leitet. 1995 erhielt er den „Jazzpreis“ der Stadt Frankfurt am Main.
„Manfred Bründl is a man who works meticulously. He is not an iconoclast, he doesn’t do things for the sake of it, and he isn’t a phoney or someone intent on burying traditions. Whatever he does, he does it in a well-considered way, because he isn’t starting from scratch. Finding trace elements that criss-crossedly add up, cross-hatch and densify, but still foremost leave spaces for improvisation. Or even open them up in the first place. The spaces that Bründl composes are broadly conceived. They are not sterilely furnished or even blocked up. They stimulate curiosity. Each of Manfred Bründl’s CDs had this certain More that distinguished them from the bulk of modern jazz recordings and made them solitaires. Concepts, subtexts, cross-connections and crucial experiences with other arts or when travelling, distilled into compositions, give his recordings a certain ambiguity at the very least. He is an excellent bassist anyway.
And Manfred Bründl has got exactly the right people to furnish his spaces. Soprano and alto saxophone player Hugo Read, the drummer Jonas Burgwinkel, pianist Achim Kaufmann, the enormously popular Estonian singer Liisi Koikson and the wellknown vibraphonist Wolfgang Schlüter. This music bounces, is carried by and revels in originality, and Bründl is at times the quiet and deep voice from the back that serves his mission, but he can also step to the forefront in a fresh and nuanced manner. It all adds up to an impression of infectious vitality.“
