Balkaneske Brücken zwischen Jazz, freier Improvisation und Folklore bestätigen die Offenheit und Vielseitigkeit dieser Band, bestätigen den Willen, stets Neues aufzugreifen. In der Person von Charlotta Hagfors aus Finnland auch den Gesang. Hagfors klare Stimme verzaubert, wie bei „Wizards Cube“ und „Missing Geisha“ zu erleben. Somit bekommt For Free Hands eine nordische Komponente.
Der Titel des neuen Albums, „Transversal“, also „quer zur Hauptrichtung“, fasst die Bandphilosophie zusammen: For Free Hands gehen ungegangene Wege, lösen sich ab vom großen Strom der immergleichen Musik, stehen in keiner Tradition und dennoch auch wieder in allen zugleich. For Free Hands praktizieren die Verbindung von musikalischem Erbe mit zeitgenössischen Ideen. Und von daher fühlen sie sich wohl, wo sie stehen: Quer zur Hauptrichtung, angekommen in der Gegenwart, aber die Vergangenheit nicht verleugnend. Und außerdem noch in die Zukunft schauend.

Influences of various dispositions are not only evident in the expression of the four players or in the virtuosic handling of their instruments. Balkanesque bridges between jazz, free improvisation and folklore attest to the candor and versatility of this band, they attest the will to constantly take on something new. As the most recent addition, in the person of Charlotta Hagfors from Finland, there is vocals: Hagfors clear voice enchants, as one can experience in “Wizards Cube” and “Missing Geisha”. With this For Free Hands incorporate as well a Nordic element. Balkan and Scandinavia, a mixture which has been hitherto inconceivable.
The title of the new album“Transversal”, meaning “at right angle to the mainstream”, summarizes the philosophy of the band in one word: For Free Hands go untrodden paths, they detach themselves from the unvarying main stream, they do not blindly follow one tradition, but nevertheless commit themselves to all of them. For Free Hands practice the coalescence of musical heritage with contemporary ideas. And therefore they feel quite comfortable where they are standing: At right angle to the mainstream, duly arrived in the present, without denying the past. And moreover, looking into the future.
