Das JazzBaltica Ensemble steht wie keine andere Idee für die Geschichte des 20jährigen Festivals.
Nachdem das JazzBaltica Ensemble vor zwei Jahren zu neuen Ufern aufbrach und dafür in wesentlichen Positionen neu besetzt wurde, stand die Formation in Jubiläumsjahr 2010 unter der Leitung des international vielgefragten Bassisten Martin Wind. Der 1968 in Flensburg geborene Musiker fungierte in der vergangenen Dekade als wichtiges Bindeglied zwischen den Jazzszenen in Deutschland und den USA. Schon 2009 beim Esbjörn Svensson-Tribute »Treasures« des schwedischen Saxofonisten Joakim Milder bildete er zusammen mit Andi Haberl an den Drums die rhythm section. Und nun erklingen Winds Kompositionen erstmals in Orchester-Besetzung. Im Mittelpunkt des Konzerts steht ein Werk in Erinnerung an Theresia Haarmann, das Martin Wind in den letzten zwei Wochen ihres Lebens geschrieben hat. In dieser Ehrung kommt zum Ausdruck, welch hohes Ansehen sie unter den Künstlern genießt.
Martin Winds musikalische Entwicklung ist eng mit den Namen dreier Pianisten verbunden: Bill Mays, Dena DeRose und Don Friedman, deren Trio er angehört. »Als Bassist liegen meine Haupteinflüsse klar bei den Meistern Ray Brown, Ron Carter und Wolfgang Guettler«, so Wind; »In meiner New Yorker Zeit habe ich gelernt, mir die Freiheit zu nehmen, ich selbst zu sein.« Für seine Premiere als Ensembleleiter hat Martin Wind überraschende Gäste und den »Artist in Residence« Michael Wollny auf die Bühne geholt. Daneben sorgt ein exquisiter deutsch-skandinavischer Bläsersatz um den Ensembleleiter 2008, Johannes Enders, für die nötige Soundfülle. Mit Øyvind Brække konnte die Bläser-Section um eine wertvolle sechste Stimme bereichert werden. Der norwegische Posaunist gilt als hochkarätiger Geheimtipp.

Since the beginning of the JazzBaltica festival is the international “JazzBaltica Ensemble” an important part every year on the stage. The director of the special Jubilee Ensemble for the 20th birthday of the festival in 2010 was the bassist and composer Martin Wind.
Winds musical development is closely connected with the names of three pianists Bill Mays, Dena De Rose and Don Friedman, whose trio he belongs. Martin Wind‘s compositions are first heard in this large ensemble format.
“As a bassist, my main influences are clearly the masters Ray Brown, Ron Carter and Wolfgang Guettler“ said Wind, “In my New York time, I have learned to take me the freedom to be myself.”
Martin Wind‘s bass playing grooves together with the trombone-tip and free spirit Øyvind Brække, this year‘s “Artist in Residence“ Michael Wollny, and Donny McCaslin and Nils Wülker. The composition “Theresia“ with special guests Nils Landgren, Lars Danielsson and Wolfgag Haffner is an outstanding and powerful hommage to Theresia Haarmann who died in 2009. She was such a big part of this festival, but always stayed behind the scenes.
The concert of the Jazz Baltica Ensemble is a highlight of the 20th anniversary and represents both the idea and the history of the festival.
