Als Hommage an Paul Desmond (1924-1977), des legendären
amerikanischen Cool-Jazz-Komponisten (Take Five) und Altsaxophonisten
(Dave Brubeck, Modern Jazz Quartet, Chet Baker), hat Ilona Haberkamp
ihr Album „I Remember Paul“ konzipiert.“Du klingst wie Paul Desmond“,
hatte man ihr schon früh bestätigt. Ilonas Tonvorstellung, ihre Idee,
die Intonation und die Zartheit ihres Spiels hätten Paul stolz
gemacht, schreibt Herb Geller.
Und nun hat sie ihr Paula Dezz Quartet ins Leben gerufen und mit ihm
das Album „I Remember Paul“ aufgenommen. Eingespielt mit einer
musikalisch hoch kompetenten Besetzung, lässt die talentierte
Saxophonistin ihr Instrument im vollendeten Einklang mit dem lyrischen
Ton der niederländischen Flügelhornisten- und Trompeter- Größe Ack van
Rooyen (United Jazz & Rock Ensemble, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis),
ertönen.Mit Bruno Castellucci hat sie einen Schlagzeuger in die Band
integriert, dessen Können und Spielwitz außer Frage steht und der 1977
für eine Aufnahmesession mit Paul Desmond in London von Ruud Jacobs
gebucht war.Paul G. Ulrich, jahrelanger Bassist von Paul Kuhn,
überzeugt über das harmonische Fundament hinaus durch swingende
Basslinien und gestrichene, eigenwillige Basssoli. Der Pianist Frank
Wunsch schließlich, bekannt durch seine auf Laika-Records erschienenen
Alben mit Lee Konitz, rundet mit seinemdifferenzierten und
farbenreichen Spiel sowie zwei Eigenkompositionen die wunderbare
musikalische Reise zu Ehren Paul Desmonds ab.Eine Hommage, wie man sie
sich schöner eigentlich nicht vorstellen kann, ein „Desmond
revisited“, und das macht Paul Desmond noch ein bisschen
unsterblicher.
Initiated by and under the leadership of Desmond's German devotee
Ilona Haberkamp, a group has assembled which consists of the pianist
Frank Wunsch, who has played with Lee Konitz, of trumpet player Ack
van Rooyen, the founding father of the United Jazz And Rock Ensemble,
of bass player Paul G. Ulrich, who has been swinging with Paul Kuhn
for many years, and of Bruno Castellucci, a drummer who is up to ever
trick in jazz and rock music - each one a star on the European scene
in his own right. First and foremost this is motivated by their own
subjective and personal enthusiasm, even passion. Simultaneously, this
effort proves the continuing fascination with what can succinctly be
called the "Desmond feeling": head and heart, reason and emotion,
sense and sensibility not as opposites, as they so often are, but
walking hand in hand. And just as a critic used to attest a "cool and
sparkling appeal" to this prototype of a Cool Jazz player, this is no
less true for this CD: it is a kind of homage which can hardly be
imagined any better, a "Desmond Revisited" which is - if that were
possible - making Paul Desmond even more immortal.
