ERNIE WATTS : Neues Album "Oasis"
Der Grammy-Preisträger Ernie Watts, Tenor-Saxophonist und Komponist, legt ein unvergleichlich vielseitiges und umfangreiches Schaffen vor. Sein Spiel erklingt auf hunderten von Alben, in Fernseh- und Filmmusiken, er fungiert als stets gefragter Studiomusiker, und widmet sich auch eigenen Bandprojekten. "Mein ehrgeiziges Ziel war es immer, ein großer Saxophonist zu werden, ohne irgend jemanden zu imitieren", erzählt er über seine Motivation, doch hätten ihn John Coltrane und Miles Davis beeinflusst.
Insgesamt hat Ernie Watts bei über 500 Produktionen mitgewirkt (u.a. mit Frank Zappa, Mick Jagger, Dizzie Gillespie oder Charly Haden) und gilt heutzutage als einer der routiniertesten Saxophonisten. Er ist zweifacher Grammy-Preisträger. Ernie Watts war auch an der Aufnahme der Filmmusiken zu Die Farbe Lila, Ghostbusters, Tootsie und Fame beteiligt.
Musik ist die Oase, in der Ernie Watts lebt, seitdem er vor fünfzig Jahren zum Horn griff, und davon berichtet sein neues Album „Oasis“. Aufgenommen in Deutschland, speist sich diese Oase aus vielen musikalischen Quellen. Drei Eigenkompositionen des Bandleaders, ein energiegeladener Samba seines Pianisten Christof Sänger und eine komplexe Komposition des Schlagzeugers Heinrich Koebberling, ergänzen die Interpretationen von Jazz-Klassikern, wie „Shaw Nuff“ von Parker/Gillespie, „One Day I‘ll Fly Away“ von Joe Sample oder „Crecent“ von John Coltrane. „Blackbird“ von Lennon/McCartney hat man so auch noch nicht gehört.
Das Zusammenspiel des Quartetts ist frei von Effekthascherei und voller Energie. Nicht zu künsteln, das ist die Kunst des Ernie Watts.
Saxophone player and composer Ernie Watts, who wins a "Grammy" in 1982, is known as a prolific and versatile artist. He appears on hundreds of LPs, CDs, or movie soundtracks. He is in great demand as a studio musician and sideman, before getting his first own band started. "I always wanted to become a great saxophone player, but never had in mind to imitate anybody else," he tells about his motivation. However, John Coltrane and Miles Davis give him inspiration.
Music has been an oasis for Ernie Watts his whole life, ever since he first picked up a horn over fifty years ago. Since he and his wife started Flying Dolphin in 2004, his oasis has grown even deeper. This new project, recorded in Germany, has music from many sources: three compositions from Watts himself: lingering "Twilight Waltz," joyful "Bass Geige"(colloquial German for 'upright bass,') and title track "Oasis." Energetic samba "Palmito" is by pianist Christof Saenger, and intricate "Konbanwa" from drummer Heinrich Koebberling. A bebop classic, "Shaw Nuff"is by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; the soaring ballad "You Are There" comes from Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, and "One Day I'll Fly Away" (made famous in Moulin Rouge) from Joe Sample and Will Jennings. Also included is Lennon/McCartney tune "Blackbird," and "Crescent" by Ernie's major inspiration John Coltrane, each tune with a Watts interpretation and his superlative sound, as well as a band that unites as one. This Oasis is wide as well as deep.
