Der Saxophonist und Komponist Ernie Watts, der 1982 mit einem "Grammy" ausgezeichnet wird, legt ein unvergleichlich vielseitiges und umfangreiches Schaffen vor. Sein Spiel erklingt auf hunderten von Alben, in Fernseh- und Filmmusiken, er fungiert als stets gefragter Studiomusiker, noch eher er sich auch eigenen Bandprojekten widmet. "Mein ehrgeiziges Ziel war es immer, ein großer Saxophonist zu werden, ohne irgend jemanden zu imitieren", erzählt er über seine Motivation, trotzdem hätten ihn John Coltrane und Miles Davis beeinflusst.

Ernie Watts wird 1945 in Norfolk, Virginia geboren und lebt unter anderem jahrelang in Los Angeles. 1965 gestattet ihm ein Stipendium, am Berklee College in Boston zu studieren. Schon während dieser Zeit verpflichtet ihn Buddy Rich, mit dessen Band er von 1966 bis 1968 auf Tour geht. Es folgen jene Jahre, in denen er als Studiomusiker und Sideman an einer Unzahl von Projekten beteiligt ist und allen auffällt, die Rang und Namen haben, von Cannonball Aderley über Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones bis hin zu Frank Zappa.
Zudem wirkt Ernie Watts an einer Vielzahl von Filmmusiken mit, so für die Kassenschlager "Tootsie", "Die Farbe Lila" oder "Die fabelhaften Baker Boys".
Das erste Album mit einer eigenen Formation legt Ernie Watts 1972 vor, zehn Jahre später erhält die LP "Chariots of Fire" eine der begehrten "Grammy" Trophäen. Im Jahr 1987 bildet sich in Los Angeles das Ernie Watts Quartet mit David Witham (Piano). Bruce Lett (Bass) und Bob Leatherbarrow (Schlagzeug). Doch als sei ein Quartet nicht genug, entsteht vor rund einem Dutzend Jahren ein zweites Ernie Watts Quartet auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks, und zwar in Köln. Christof Sänger (Piano), Rudi Engel (Bass) und Heinrich Köbberling am Schlagzeug sind Ernies Mitspieler in Deutschland. Mit beiden Quartetten tritt Ernie Watts auf oder spielt Alben ein.
So wundert es nicht, dass in beiden Bands der Wunsch auftaucht, einmal ein gemeinsames Projekt zu erarbeiten. Im aktuellen Album "Four plus Four" wird dies Realität. Von den sieben Titeln der CD steuert jedes Quartett drei bei. Ein Titel aber, "Through My Window", ein bewährter Watts-Witham-Titel, präsentiert sie beide, und führt sie zur Höchstform. Die deutsche Formation beginnt, bis in einen Abschnitt hinein, der Improvisationen Raum lässt. Mittendrin übernimmt dann das amerikanische Quartett und spielt den Titel bis zum Ende. "Eine gute Band spielt nicht nur Musik," hat Ernie einmal gesagt, "sie wird zu Musik", Four plus Four in diesem Fall.

He is in great demand as a studio musician and sideman, before getting his first own band started. "I always wanted to become a great saxophone player, but never had in mind to imitate anybody else," he tells about his motivation. However, John Coltrane and Miles Davis give him inspiration.

In the year 1987, the Ernie Watts Quartet is getting started in L.A., presenting David Witham (piano), Bruce Lett (bass) and Bob Leatherbarrow (drums). But only one quartet doesn't seem to be enough. Approximately twelwe years ago, another Ernie Watts Quartet is founded abroad, in Cologne, Germany. Christof Sänger (piano), Rudi Engel (bass) and Heinrich Köbberling on the drums are the players in this european band. Ernie plays and records with each.
It's not surprising, that the musicians always ask to work together in one project. This becomes real in the new album "Four plus Four". There is a total of seven tracks, each band plays three tunes. But "Through My Window", the Watts/Witham original, features both bands. The german quartet begins the tune, and in the middle of the piece there is a section for improvisation. They improvise for a while, and the US quartet takes over and completes the piece. "A marvellous band doesn't just play music together", Ernie always says, "but it becomes music", Four plus Four in this case.
