Der Bassist und Komponist Martin Wind erblickte 1968 in Flensburg das Licht der Welt.
1995 beendete er ein Studium am Kölner Konservatorium als Orchestermusiker bei Prof. Wolfgang Güttler mit dem Diplom. Ein Stipendium ermöglichte es ihm anschließend, seine Studien an der New Yorker Universität fortzusetzen, wo er daher seit 1996 lebt und arbeitet. 1998 schloss er dieses Studium bei Mike Richmond, Jim McNeely, Tom Boras, Mike Holober und Kenny Werner mit dem "Master" in Jazz Performance und Komposition ab.
Mehrfach räumte Martin Wind bedeutende Preise ab: 1995 wurde er dritter Preisträger der "International Thelonious Monk Bass Competition" in Washington DC. 1996 gewann er den ersten Cognac Hennessy - Blue Note Jazz Wettbewerb und nahm daraufhin das Album "Dreiklang" auf. Im Jahr 2000 wurde ihm die Ehre zuteil, als erster Jazzmusiker überhaupt mit dem Kulturpreis seines Heimatlandes Schleswig-Holstein ausgezeichnet zu werden. 2010 wurde Martin Wind Leiter des JazzBaltica Ensembles - zum 20. Jubiläum dieses großen Jazzfestes.
Martin Wind ist Mitglied der Trios von Bill Mays, Don Friedman und Dena DeRose, zudem des Matt Wilson Quartetts “Arts and Crafts”. Daneben spielt er gelegentlich mit dem Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. So verwundert es kaum, dass Martin Wind an über 80 Alben und Filmmusik-Einspielungen mitwirkte. Die Liste der Künstler, mit denen er zusammentraf ist entsprechend lang: Mstislav Rostropowitsch, Gidon Kremer, Christa Ludwig, Pat Metheny, Benny Golson, Lalo Schifrin, Buddy DeFranco, Cedar Walton, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Mike Stern, Michael und Randy Brecker, James Moody und Hank Jones.
Inzwischen liegt das Hauptaugenmerk jedoch auf seiner eigenen Formation, dem “Martin Wind Quartet”. Dieses absolvierte diverse Auftritte im New Yorker "Kitano Club" und bereits zwei Deutschland-Tourneen. Die Erfahrungen, die Martin Wind im Laufe der Zeit durch das Zusammentreffen mit all den bedeutenden Künstlern sammeln konnte, wirkte sich prägend auf das Programm des Quartetts aus. Ausserdem gehören Klassiker zum Repertoire wie Bill Evans “Turn out the Stars”, “Come Sunday” von Duke Ellington oder “Bright Mississippi” von Thelonious Monk. Als Motto hat sich die Band einen simplen Spruch auserkoren: "Alles ist drin!". Im Jahr 2008 erschien ihr erstes Album "Salt'n Pepper!"
Die Musiker:
Scott Robinson spielt Tenorsaxofon und Bassklarinette, Martin hält ihn für einen der fähigsten Jazzmusiker überhaupt.
Bill Cuncliffe kommt aus L.A. Er kennt einfach alles, die Klavierkonzerte eines Rachmaninow genauso wie alles von Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Stevie Wonder oder Frank Zappa. Auswendig.
Tim Horner ist ein Veteran der New Yorker Szene, geschult in diversen Bigbands. Martin schätzt nicht nur sein Schlagzeugspiel, sondern auch die Möglichkeit, mit ihm über Gott und die Welt und natürlich auch über Sport quatschen zu können.

Bassist and composer Martin Wind was born in Flensburg, Germany in 1968. In 1995 he earned himself a diploma as Orchestra Musician at the Music Conservatory in Cologne, Germany while studying with Prof. Wolfgang Güttler and moved to New York in 1996 to study at New York University (NYU) with a german scholarship. In 1998 he finished his studies at NYU with a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and Composition studying with Mike Richmond, Jim McNeely, Tom Boras, Mike Holober and Kenny Werner.
Martin Wind celebrated some award winnings: In 1995 Martin came in third at the International Thelonious Monk Bass Competition in Washington, D.C. In 1996 Martin won the first Cognac Hennessy - Blue Note Jazz Search and got to record the album “Dreiklang”. In the year 2000 he was honoured as the first Jazz musician to win the Cultural Award of his home state Schleswig-Holstein. In 2010, in the year of the 20th anniversary of this major german Jazz Festival, he was appointed as Leader of the JazzBaltica Ensemble.
Martin Wind is a member of the trios of Bill Mays, Don Friedman and Dena DeRose. Meanwhile, Martin Wind is proud to present his first working band “Martin Wind Quartet”, that features the talents of Scott Robinson (reeds), Bill Cunliffe (piano) and Tim Horner on drums. In the past the group played at the Kitano Club in New York and completed two tours to Germany. The “Martin Wind Quartet” plays originals that partly result from the Martin’s studies with Kenny Werner, Mike Holober and Jim McNeely. Also part of the repertoire of the band are classics such as Bill Evans’ “Turn out the Stars”, Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and Thelonious Monk’s “Bright Mississippi”. The band’s motto has always been “anything goes!”. The group's first album “Salt’n Pepper!” was released in 2008.
The Musicians:
Scott Robinson plays mainly tenor sax and bass clarinet. For Martin, Scott is one of the most original musicians that he's ever met.
Bill Cunliffe lives in L.A. He can play everything, Rachmaninov’s piano concertos, anything that Duke Ellington or Monk or Bud Powell ever composed, as well as the songs by Stevie Wonder or Frank Zappa.
Tim Horner is veteran on the New York jazz scene, he made his reputation as a big band drummer. For Martin, he is not only his favorite drummer, but also a friend who loves to talk about baseball.
